Lakes Tekapo and Pūkaki in the Mackenzie Basin hold about 50% of the country’s hydroelectric storage. This map shows the completion date and capacity of the eight power stations in the Waitaki River catchment. If the lake levels get low during winter, when demand for power is high, New Zealand can face a power crisis – as occurred in 1992.
