Liverworts and mosses

Liverworts and mosses

Liverworts are often found growing with mosses, and can be found in abundance in diverse habitats in New Zealand from the coast to the alpine zone, but are most luxuriant in rainforests. Although individually small, they often grow mixed together in large colonies, forming mats that carpet not only the soil and rocks of the forest floor, but also the bark and leaves of trees right up into the canopy.
